To the University of Delaware Community:

I was saddened and distressed yesterday, as I’m sure you were, as the horrible details surrounding the event in Orlando, Florida, emerged throughout the day. My deepest sympathies—and those of the entire University community—go out to the individuals who were attacked and to their families and friends.

I know this incident strikes a deep chord with members of our LGBTQ and Muslim communities, and I want them to know that their friends and colleagues on this campus mourn with them.

At this University, we work hard to foster acceptance and inclusivity, and such an act of violence and hatred is particularly repugnant.

For any members of our community who are struggling to deal with this issue, please know that there are services available to all students, faculty and staff.

In my brief time here, I have already witnessed the caring and supportive community at the University, and I know it can be a source of strength and comfort for each of us during this trying time.

Sincerely,

Thomas LaPenta
