Making Over Substance Abuse Interventions on Campus (MOSAIC) is a grant funded research project which is allowing the Wellspring Student Wellness Program to test new, research-supported ways of intervening with its UD student participants BEFORE alcohol- and/or drug – related negative behaviors or consequences take effect.
- Questions like “What works to keep college students who drink safe?” need to be asked and answered.
- And truths like “Yes, a short, 15-minute conversation with certain someone’s about your choice to drink or not drink CAN really influence how and when and why you choose to drink!” need to be disseminated.
- And most of all, college students voices need to be heard at the level of the national conversation which is taking place RIGHT NOW about alcohol use on college campuses!
It’s pretty clear that intervening and providing help to one who has exhibited problematic drinking does work. Its time to find out how much more effective it might be to keep college students from needing this type of intervention to begin with.
Is it possible to identify those who are likely to get into trouble or experience a personal, academic or social problem as a result of drinking and/or drugging? Lots of research suggests it is.
But does that research apply to UD? To actual students on this campus? To the particularly unique little college town of Newark, Delaware?
Or are UD students resistant to the same measures that seem to be working elsewhere?
...We need you.
Abstainer, Social Drinkers, Occasional Drinkers, Responsible Drinkers, Moderate Drinkers, Frequent Drinkers, Experimenters, Users, and Frequent Users: Members of the MOSAIC team are interested in talking with you one-on-one for approximately 15 minutes. You will be given a brief screening tool. You will be asked some pretty interesting questions (we didn’t write them!). And if you are willing to talk, you will have a chance to tell us what this experience has been like for you. Honestly. And in approximately 6 months, we will ask you to answer these same questions again. And again, if you are willing, we will invite you to tell us if this entire experience has meant anything to you at all.
That’s it. Honestly.
