El Futuro

The future tense is used to talk about something that has not happened yet, or that will or is going to happen.

  • To translate the English "will" + infinitive, use the so called synthetic future:

Mañana compraremos un coche nuevo.

tomorrow we will buy a new car.

  • To translate the English "going to" + infinitive, use "ir" + a + infinitive:

Mañana voy a comprar un coche nuevo.

Mañana vas a comprar un coche nuevo.

Mañana va a comprar un coche nuevo.

Mañana vamos a comprar un coche nuevo.

Mañana vais a comprar un coche nuevo.

Mañana van a comprar un coche nuevo.

Tomorrow I am going to buy a new car.

Tomorrow you are going to buy a new car.

Tomorrow he/ she is going to buy a new car.

Tomorrow we are going to buy a new car.

Tomorrow you are going to buy a new car.

Tomorrow they are going to buy a new car.

The same as in English, the first form is more formal and reserved to the written expression and for something to happen in not such a distant future.

  • The future can also expressed with the present tense in Spanish, if there is a time indicator nearby indicating that we are talking about something in the future:

Mañana compramos un coche nuevo.

Tomorrow we are going to buy a new car.

Salimos or vamos a salir a las cinco.

We are leaving at 5.
