Green Building

ISE Lab was constructed following the standards of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver designation.

Problem-Based Learning

The 21st Century workforce demands innovative thinkers. Classes held in the building educate our students using problem-based teaching methods. Presented with a problem, students learn how to solve it through hands-on investigation.

HIGH TECH CLASSES

Harker Lab's classrooms include the latest in educational technology, tools that enhance students' capabilities and experience. Mobile furniture allows for flexibility of seating arrangements to suit group or individual work.

ADVANCED LABS

Advanced laboratory spaces include: an imaging and microscopy suite, a nanofabrication facility, a synthesis lab and an advanced materials characterization lab. Lab space is available for use by UD researchers, students and industry partners.

RESEARCH

Three of UD's distinguished research centers: the University of Delaware Energy Institute, the Delaware Environmental Institute and the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation call ISE Lab home.

Research

The Patrick T. Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (Harker Lab) is a hub of teaching and research on campus. The 194,000-square-foot facility brings together students and faculty from various disciplines to teach, learn and conduct research in a collaborative environment. Research provides content for the curriculum and students learn through the exploration of real-world problems.

Completed in 2013, Harker Lab engages students and stimulates excitement about science and engineering.

Inside you will not find large lecture halls. No classroom holds more than 48 students. ISE Lab's four problem-based learning instructional laboratories feature lab spaces adjoining classrooms so students can discuss a problem and then immediately test a solution. UD faculty have designed curricula to optimally utilize these rooms.

The building's eight general instruction classrooms and Interdisciplinary Science Learning Laboratories all include the latest in educational technology and mobile furniture, allowing for flexibility of seating arrangements to suit group or individual work.

Students in need of supplemental instruction in math and science courses can find assistance in the Learning Community Center located on the second floor.

The research wing houses core facilities for teams of researchers, including:

It is also the new home of the University of Delaware Energy Institute, the Delaware Environmental Institute, and the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation.

GRAND OPENING

The Harker Lab celebrated its grand opening and dedication ceremony on October 17, 2013. A recap of the day's festivities, including video of the keynote with KR Sridhar and photos of the day, are now available online.
