Review for Test 2

Try to keep in mind a couple of points. First, think about general principles or ideas or propositions and then apply them to specific questions. Second, as suggested before, read a question and anticipate a response. Then look at the list. The response closest to your anticipated answer is may be the correct one. Finally, pick the best response; don't analyze a question to the point of losing common sense.

Note this test will not cover There Are No Children Here.

  1. Patrick Kennedy earned the nomination to run for U.S. representative mostly because
    1. of his long years of service in the Democratic party.
    2. of his long years of service in the Rhode Island legislature.
    3. of his experience as a national party campaign worker and fund raiser.
    4. None of the above.*

I have stressed how Kennedy represents a classic political entrepreneur who is a "self-made" person.

  1. The fact that the president, senators, and representatives are separately or independently elected has which of these effects?
    1. Interferes with policy making.
    2. Makes it hard for citizens to hold leaders accountable.
    3. Hinders presidential and congressional cooperation.
    4. All of the above.*

This choice reflects one of the course's central themes.

  1. Data presented in class suggest that voting turnout
    1. decreased after 1900 but has increased dramatically in the last 10 years as a result of controversy over the "Contract With America."
    2. has gone up and down with swings in the economy that have affected the public's contentment.
    3. has increased mainly because of improvements in communications.
    4. has decreased despite improvements in education and communications.*

See the notes and reading. Despite a few ups the trend in turnout has been mostly down over the past 100 years.

  1. The "strategy of ambiguity" means
    1. politicians work behind closed doors.
    2. candidates try to hide or obscure their positions on controversial issues.*
    3. politics is confusing.
    4. none of the above.

Campaign advisors stress ducking controversial issues, if possible, and taking "tough" stances on easy ones such as "law and order." Sometimes "waffling" on an issue such as abortion does not work. But those who study polls for a living seem to find danger for their clients on most public controversies.

  1. Which of these programs was the essential part of "Reaganomics"?
    1. 25 percent cut in income taxes.*
    2. Elimination of the national sales tax.
    3. Reduction in tariffs.
    4. All of the above.

Had to have been in class to know this.

  1. The recently passed "motor voter" legislation is designed to do which of these?
    1. Ensure that only licensed drivers are registered to vote.
    2. Ensure that people with unpaid traffic and parking tickets pay them before voting.
    3. Ensure that people do not register to vote in more than one place.
    4. None of the above.*

Motor voter is an effort, to use my terms, to reduce the costs of registration and hence participation by allowing citizens to register in a variety of public places at more convenient.
