Writing Assignment #4 & 4H Using Intelligence Imagery Due: Wednesday, April 23, 2003
Preamble:
Overhead imagery can be a powerful tool in the intelligence and espionage arsenal. In this assignment, you will choose either of two options to explore that power.
Project:
This is a team project. Choose one other student with whom to work together on this assignment.
- Option 1 - Current Affairs:
- Use the internet to explore publicly-available overhead/aerial imagery.
Among the places to do this:
- Choose a location. Imagine this location is the subject of a major international controversy or conflict or choose an actual site of political conflict or controversy. Describe how you would use imagery to help resolve the conflict or controversy. What could you hope to learn from these images? How might they help settle the dispute? Could they endanger a solution? Might lives be saved? Might they be lost? What about effects on the environment, commerce, statehood, etc?
- Try to find images which illustrate your narrative; include them in your paper.
- Option 2 - Historical Case:
- Choose an historical instance in which overhead imagery actually played a significant political or military role.
- Describe how aerial imagery affected the course of events.
- Try to find images which illustrate your narrative; include them in your paper, using some of the sites listed above, or other references you locate on your own.
I dont want to limit your creativity and exploration of topics for this assignment, but I want to illustrate some ways you might approach it. The following list is not inclusive or in any way restrictive. You do not have to choose one of these examples. They merely illustrate how you might tackle this assignment.

- European flooding: Imagery illustrating commercial, industrial impacts
