UD alumnus Ken Whitney's $15,000 gift challenges young alumni to give

The University of Delaware Office of Development has announced that the Whitney Challenge is now under way and will match all gifts up to $25 from undergraduate alumni from the Classes of 2002-11, dollar-for-dollar, up to $15,000.

Young alumni are urged to take advantage of the Whitney match until Dec. 31, or until all $15,000 has been designated.

Sponsored by long-time UD supporters Kenneth C. Whitney, UD alumnus and member of the Board of Trustees, and Elizabeth K. Whitney, the goal of the Whitney Challenge is to increase giving participation from undergraduate alumni from the Classes of 2002-11.

With the state of Delaware facing financial constraints that have limited the funding it can provide to UD, the University relies increasingly on private support. A large portion of UD’s living alumni graduated in the last 10 years, so developing a lifelong habit of giving back is crucial to the University’s future. Whitney said he hopes that his matching money will encourage young alumni to contribute any amount they can to the areas about which they are most passionate.

“By matching $25 gifts, I hope young alumni realize that charitable gifts don’t have to be large -- that all contributions help support the future of our University,” said Whitney, a 1980 graduate of the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. “I look forward to seeing what our collective support can do for our alma mater.”

Alumni giving keeps UD strong and supports everything from scholarships, laboratory equipment and guest speakers to research, study abroad opportunities and other areas that tuition and fees alone can’t cover. In addition to keeping UD strong, alumni gifts help boost the University's rankings in publications such as U.S. News & World Report.

“I am truly grateful for the support and generosity of Mr. Whitney,” said Dan Fitzpatrick, a UD alumnus who graduated in 2007. “I encourage my fellow classmates to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. It is not about how much you give but about coming together as an alumni community helping to impact the Blue Hens of tomorrow.”
