Welcome to Spreadsheet Applications
via the Internet

This is an advanced course providing experience using electronic spreasheet software as a data analysis and management tool.

The course manual provides realistic, business world cases in the context of solving a problem. Throughout the manual, attention is paid to the multi-cultural, international and ethical issues of business today.

The course begins with two brief overviews - one that compares the Windows 95 and 98 user interfaces and one that provides a quick review of Excel fundamentals.   Regardless of your background, you should go through both overviews.

You will be using the following resources for this course.

Course Manual"New Perspectives Microsoft Excel 97 - Comprehensive", a step-by-step instruction manual (with data files) for using Microsoft Excel 97.
Serf ForumYou will be using online Forums to discuss topics with your instructor and other students.

NOTE! While it is NOT part of this NCC course, by successfully completing the tutorials, case problems and appendices in the text, you will be prepared to take the Expert level MSOUS Exam for Microsoft Excel 97. This is the official Microsoft certification exam for Excel proficiency. Visit the MSOUS Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/office/train_cert/ for details. Student Skill Assessment (grading)

Read this section carefully. These are the official grading guidelines and policies.
Assessment of your skills will take 3 forms.
    1. The assignment at the end of each tutorial
    2. Selected case projects
    3. On-campus tests

    Grades are assigned as follows:

    • Tutorial Assignments: 50% of final grade
    • Case Projects: 30% of final grade
    • On-campus tests: 20% of final grade
All assigned tutorials and case projects are expected to be submitted on time.
Given the generous amount of time alloted for covering course material, there are serious penalties for late work.

NOTE! The quality of your work is a component of your grade. Your work must be done neatly and professionally.

All of your work will be submitted online via SERF. Normally, you will not be required to send diskettes or printouts to your instructor. That policy may change at the discretion of your instructor. If it does, note the following requirements for printouts and diskettes.

    • Printouts
      • Printouts must be as legible as any official business letter, resumé etc.
      • If the printer you're using is starting to print faded characters, change the ink cartridge or ribbon. Do not submit faded, smeared, torn, whiteout-corrected, taped printouts. They will not be accepted for grading.
    • Floppy Disks
      • Floppy disks must be labeled with: your name course name and section number (see your registration papers). Any floppy disk must be sent with a paper detailing its contents. Disks not accompanied by such a list will be returned ungraded.
      • Disk files must be named properly and readable by the configuration listed in the "Hardware and Software Configuration" prior to this section.

    TESTS
    Location:

    • If you registered through Monroe Campus, you must take the test at the Monroe Campus library.
    • If you registered through the Bethlehem Main Campus, you must take the test at the Bethlehem Main Campus library.
If you need to make special arrangements for taking on-campus tests, contact your instructor.   See "Contacting Your Instructor" under general information.

    Instructions for taking tests:

    • You will need to show some type of official photo ID to the librarian who will then give you the test.
    • Follow the instructions on the cover sheet of the test.
    • When finished, leave all materials with the librarian.
Your grade will be mailed to you within two weeks. EventID: 15877 SyllabusID: 241 Position: 6 Type: 1 Heading: Contacting Your Instructor Tracking: 0 Weight: 0 Deadline: 0 Columns: 2 Formatting: 3 Text:

    Condensed Course Schedule

This condensed schedule gives you a quick overview of when and where topics fall during the course. A detailed schedule of work, assignments and assessments follows this outline.

NOTE: The time allotments for the course sections are designed so that you can procede at a relaxed pace. Do not rush with this course.   It starts with a deceptively easy work load, but soon develops to a level that demands very careful thinking and preparation on your part.

Pace yourself! While you do not have to stick exactly to this schedule, it is strongly advised that you stay as close as possible.

Do the following two things for week one.
    1. Review Pages WIN 95.1 through WIN 95.29 in the course manual. No matter what your background with Windows, use this week to make sure you are capable of doing the following in the Windows 95 environment.

      • running multiple programs simultaneously
      • formatting disks
      • setting up directories (folders)
      • copying, moving, renaming and backing up files and directories.
      • using WordPad and Paint

Go over the section reviewing the Windows 98 Interface that immediately follows the Windows 95 review. NOTE: If you are using Windows 98 Interface, don't worry. It does not affect you for this course. The differences between Windows 95 and 98 are transparent to most users, and irrelevant to Excel 97 (as far as we are concerned).

    2. Download the data files needed for your manual.

      • Create a folder to hold the data files you will download.
      • Use your browser to go to the Web site for you manual.
        http://www.course.com
      • Click on data disk files (Under the Student Learning Heading)
      • Click on Spreadsheets (to right of the "Software" caption)
      • Click on Microsoft Excel 97
      • Scroll down until you see the title of your text "New Perspectives on Microsoft Excel 97 Comprehensive Enhanced" by June Parsons, Dan Oja and Roy Ageloff.
      • Make sure you are in the folder you created and click from backup site for the first group of files. STOP! Before you click save, make sure the "Save in" box has your folder in it. If so, click save. NOTE: You are downloading self-extracting files. When you click on the files, they will uncompress themselves.
      • Repeat the process for the remaining four file groups.

If you encounter difficulties downloading the data files, contact your instructor. Click "Contacting Your Instructor" in the Detailed Index for details.

NOTE: There is nothing this week that needs to be submitted to your instructor.
