What Is Internet Literacy?
Internet Literacy is a college course that teaches how to do the Internet.
The course has a textbook, CD, and Web site.

What Is Internet Literacy?
In step-by-step tutorials, you learn the basic Internet services of e-mail, listserv, newsgroups, FTP, chats, telnet, and the World Wide Web.
You practice surfing techniques and search strategies and learn how to download text, images, sounds, video, data, and software.

What Is Internet Literacy?
A hands-on tutorial teaches you how to create Web pages and publish them on the Web.
You learn how to bring Web pages to life with multimedia sound and graphics.
Internet Literacy won the NUCEA award for best new course.

The JPMorgan Pilot
During the fall of 2000, 32 JPMorgan employees were enrolled in the Internet Literacy course.
The course met online, in a virtual learning environment called Serf® running on the continuing education Web server at the University of Delaware.

Whenever the student has a problem in one of the step-by-step tutorials, there is a movie on the CD that shows how to complete the steps.

JPMorgan Pilot
During the JPMorgan Pilot of Internet Literacy, 32 employees experienced the course.
They expressed some likes and dislikes.

What the
Employees Liked
Employees reported that the history and background links to information are interesting and give appreciation for amount of diverse information  available.
Employees really liked the flexibility of the course.

Feeling behind and not able to cover the material at the proper pace.
Trying to find enough time to complete the course in off hours is difficult.
Some of the assignments did not seem relevant to the JPMorgan environment.

Customizing
Internet Literacy
We will shorten the course
Add links to sites considered important to JPM business or technology
Use Lotus Notes for the e-mail assignment
Customize the Web page assignment to the JPMorgan workplace
Pace by bookmarks instead of calendars

Shortening the Course
The proposed JPMorgan version of the course will last 24 hours
The revised course outline will contain six modules
By working an average of 4 hours per week, employees will be able to complete the course in six weeks
