One of San José's most enchanting and popular buildings is the
National Theater, standing proudly in the very heart of downtown San José,
next to Plaza de la Cultura. The National Theater was officially inaugurated
in October 21st, 1897, by the French Opera Company who came to Costa Rica
just for the occasion.
The decoration is absolutely impressive: remarkable fresh paintings
on the walls and ceiling, beautifully carpeted halls and foyer, elegant
balconies, luxurious furniture, marble columns, arched windows and watchful
sculptures scattered here and there.
We strongly advice you to treat yourself to a music or dance performance
at the National theater, this way you can have a look at the inside of
the theater and enjoy some of Costa Rica's art. You may also go for a day
visit every day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; there is an entrance fee of $2.5 per
person. The National Theater is located on Second Avenue, between Streets
3 and 5. There is an Art Gallery right behind the Theater, on 3d Street,
Galería Enrique Enchandi. Admission is free, and it's open to the
public week-days from 10 a.m.-12 m., and 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
