The Philosophy Behind the EELC PROJECT
The EELC is a coordinated, integrated program based on the central problem
of replicating a natural environment. In researching, designing, and creating
the engineered environment, students use the knowledge, skills, and problem-solving
processes of science, technology, and mathematics. Solving the many auxiliary
problems inherent in each phase of replicating the environment requires
the integration and application of each of these disciplines. Students
will learn discipline-specific content, the scientific method, mathematical
analysis, and the design process in the context of solving the central
problem. The complexity and magnitude of this central problem require
that students develop collaborative and communication skills as they work
with each other, teachers, and community experts to design and construct
the environment.
