MATH 251: MATH FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I
Fall 1996
1:00 - 2:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays or by appointment
The required text for Math 251 is Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Contemporary Approach, Third Edition, by Musser and Burger. The topics for this course appear in Chapters 15 and 8. You should always bring to class a calculator, the textbook, and a notebook.
The final exam will be comprehensive. Letter grades will be determined using 90%, 80%, 70%, and 60% as general guidelines for A, B, C, and D respectively.
Attendance will be taken at the end of class using a sign-in sheet.
Experience has shown that for many students attendance in the classes is
essential.
Outside of the class meeting, we will be using e-mail as the primary
form of communication between the instructor and the class. I will be sending
announcements to all members of the class, as well as occasional private
communications, using email. This syllabus and problem assignments
will be available through the University of Delaware's Web page.
Approximately 10-12 unannounced quizzes will be given throughout the semester. The lowest two quiz grades will be discarded. You will not be allowed to make up any missed quizzes.
The exercises in the text are a good guide for the kinds of problems
that will be on the quizzes, the tests and the final exam, but they are
not identical. In each class, a list of recommended homework problems will
be posted. On most days, solutions to the assigned problems will be presented
by students.
