Description:
This course is intended for the novice in the use of the Internet.
It covers the skills needed to access the Internet, including the World
Wide Web, E-mail, Listservs, Usenet, File Transfer Protocol. In addition,
the participants will explore educational sites, learn to use browsers
and how to search for information on the Net.
Assignments:
Sample movies, practice exercises, and assignments will be delivered through SERF.
Your instructor will give you the URL for the SERF site and any information you need to complete the assignments.
America OnLine uses a primitive browser that is not able to take advantage of the advanced techniques
used in SERF. If you generally access the Web using AOL, the following link will take you to a Netscape
technical reference page that gives information on how to use the latest Netscape Navigator browser while
linked to AOL: http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/970331-2.html
Prerequisites:
Student MUST have an activated University of Delaware account before
the first day of class. Both Smith Hall in Newark and the UDel site in
Georgetown will help you accomplish this critical task.
Texts:
Course Format:
Because the Internet is changing so rapidly, this course will be based
on organized exploration and sharing. In general each day will be structured
as follows:
-
First hour and fifteen minutes: Lecture/demonstration on topics
of the day
-
Next two hours and fifteen minutes: Lab work on current day's topic
concluding with a brief recap of the day in each lab. Participants should
take opportunity to make sure any questions are cleared up for the day
and the expectations for the next day are clear.
Participants should expect to spend additional time in the lab or
on home computers completing each day's activities.
Since one objective of the class is for all participants to return
to their schools ready to help others use the Internet effectively, each
participant should take an active role in helping other class members to
use the tools effectively and find new resources.
Sites you will use daily: (Remember to bookmark them.)
