Most classes will start with a review of material covered in the previous class with "participation" points awarded towards final grade, or with a short open-book, in-class exercise to be graded.   Dates for these exercises are listed tentatively in the syllabus as "in-class lab #"; actual dates will be announced one or two weeks ahead of time.

The chapter or part of a chapter of the textbook to be covered during each session is listed in the syllabus. You should read the chapter before coming to class and try to work the examples. Additional examples will be provided for you to work on in class or at home.

About 60 to 90 minutes will be devoted each class to hands-on practice with an existing Sybase database or equivalent, or to working on your own database project later in the semester.
