ELI trains Ukrainian legal professionals

The ELI-Ukraine connection continued in 1999, as four different groups of Ukrainian judges and lawyers attended programs at ELI. The programs were funded by federal grants which brought 42 Ukrainians to Delaware for training in the American legal system and the administration of justice under USIA's Community Connections program. The participants took classes and seminars in American criminal law, court procedure, and corporate and commercial law. Each group also spent 10 days in "hands-on" internships with the Delaware State Prosecutor's Office, state and federal courts, private law offices, and the Delaware Division of Corporations.

The participants have now returned to Ukraine and will pass on the knowledge they received by sharing it with their colleagues and by putting their experience to practical use. Based upon the success of its previous programs, ELI is happy to report that it has been awarded another federal grant to continue the Ukrainian legal training programs in the year 2000.
