Public school program (LEP) ELI's program for children of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), conducted on behalf of the local Christina School District, continues to evolve. Christina's English as a Second Language program expanded this year at the elementary school level. Jan LeFebvre, previously a part-time instructor for grades 1-4, has been appointed to full time teaching duties, providing classroom teaching in the mornings and teacher assistance and private tutoring in the afternoons. Jan calls her young students "enthusiastic learners who progress quickly." Kathy Vodvarka continues to teach grades 5 and 6 at Pulaski School in Wilmington. The secondary program also expanded: with the influx of 180 Hispanic students from neighboring Red Clay School District, state funding became available for the Christina School District to provide five full-time positions, rather than continuing with part-time instructors from ELI. Jo Gielow, who had been teaching in the middle school program, has returned to full time teaching at ELI while Margaret Cassling and Lisa Stevens have left ELI to accept two of the full time openings in the District. ELI's focus will now be limited to elementary school programs, with ELI Director Scott Stevens continuing to advise the District on its secondary ESL curriculum design.
