Two faculty promoted to assistant professor rank

The promotion of two veteran ELI instructors to the rank of assistant professor by the University of Delaware's Promotion and Tenure Committee was an exciting first in the area of faculty development. Ruth Jackson, who joined the ELI faculty in 1986, and Jo Gielow, at ELI since 1987, underwent the same rigorous review process that tenure-track professors have to undergo in order to be promoted, and successfully demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.

Professor Gielow has distinguished herself through the design and implementation of a model LEP program for middle schools in Delaware, while Professor Jackson has co-authored an ESL textbook and developed highly successful courses in English for Academic Purposes, English through Literature and English through Film. Both of these pioneering faculty have contributed in countless ways to ELI and to the profession.
