ELI hosts university exchange programs

A Turkish university, joining exchange programs from Japan, Korea and Spain, became the fifth higher education institution worldwide to send students to ELI for short-term language training.

Fifteen undergraduate students from Yedetepe University, a new, private university in Istanbul, spent five weeks in July and August studying business and academic English in Newark.

The Hiroshima Institute of Technology (HIT) sent 16 students in March for three weeks of intensive language study. ELI faculty member Gale Barchus also began a two-year contract teaching English to HIT students in Hiroshima. Though the exchange program is only two years old, ELI's relationship with the post-World War II institution has been growing since Mamoru Tsuru, son of HIT's chancellor and vice chairman of the Board of Directors, studied at ELI, along with his wife Yumiko, in 1987. Mamoru Tsuru later received his master's degree in education from the University of Delaware.

Kobe Shoin Women's University sent 28 students in August for three weeks of language study and cultural visits. The exchange, which began in 1992, also includes one ELI faculty member--currently Marlau Gould--who has been teaching English for two years in the private, two- and four-year school in Kobe, Japan. In addition, a number of individual students from Kobe Shoin come to ELI and then subsequently enroll in UD classes. Currently five students are enrolled, one of whom intends to transfer to the University.

ELI's longest exchange relationship, with Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, Korea, expanded this year to two five-week programs. A total of 48 students came to ELI in January and July. It was the ninth year in which the institution, which specializes in foreign languages and international relations, has sent students to ELI.

Coordinating the academic and cultural activities for these programs were faculty members Michelle Kline (Yedetepe), Assistant Director Joe Matterer (HIT), Janet Louise (Kobe Shoin) and Lisa Grimsley and Ricka Grollitsch (Hankuk).
