ELI hosts PennTESOL-East spring conference

On May 18th, 1996, ELI hosted the 16th Annual PennTESOL-East Spring Conference at the University of Delaware's Clayton Hall. "Educating the Educators" was the theme of the conference. Ruth Jackson, an ELI instructor and the current PennTESOL-East President, chaired the Conference Committee, which included Stella Bagot, Wendy Bulkowski, Barbara Gillette, Lisa Grimsley, Ricka Grollitsch, Joan Libera, Janet Louise, Donna Lumpkin, Mary McCloskey, Barbara Morris, Mary Pat Podgajny, June Quigley and Kathy Vodvarka. Donald Freeman, professor of Second Language Education and director of the Center for Teacher Education, Training, and Research at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, was the plenary speaker. His topic, "Why Teacher Development?", challenged professionals to see teacher development as a normative process, and concluded by recommending team teaching and other collaborative efforts as effective means of promoting teacher development. A highlight of Freeman's talk was a dramatic reading presented by Wendy Bulkowski, Russ Mason, Mary McCloskey and Grant Wolf. Other presentations included workshops on computers and technology, ESP (English for Specific Purposes), and American culture; "What Works" sessions; and discussions about current research in language learning. Five ELI faculty gave presentations at the conference. In addition to the presentations, participants enjoyed publishers' exhibits, a wonderful buffet lunch, the ELI house tour and afternoon drama and dance performances by ELI students.
