Delaware Special Olympics is a not-for-profit,
volunteer organization that
serves as the motivational framework within which
sports training and
competition opportunities take place for those
individuals eligible for
the program that reside in Delaware.
Delaware Special Olympics originated in 1970 is
headed by a Board of
Directors who are responsible to the citizens
of the First State for how
the program is conducted. The
Board of Directors employs a small, full-time
and part-time staff to
conduct the program on a day-to-day basis.

THE MISSION IS...
To provide year-round sports training and athletic
competition in a
variety of Olympic-type sports for children eight
years of age and older
and adults with mental handicaps, giving them
continuing opportunities to
develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage,
experience the joy of
achievement and participate in the sharing of
gifts, skill and friendship
with their families, other Special Olympics athletes
and the community.
TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE...
in Special Olympics, you must be at least eight
years old and
identified by an agency or
professional as having one of
the following conditions: a mental handicap,
cognitive
delays as measured by formal assessment, significant
learning or
vocational problems due to a cognitive
delay that require specially designed instruction.
