Pine 3.95: Printing e-mail messages on the UNIX printers

The Pine e-mail program (version 3.95) on the UNIX servers assumes that you want to print your e-mail messages on a desktop printer attached to your microcomputer or X terminal. However, you can change Pine's printer configuration so that your e-mail messages are printed on an Information Technologies NQS-networked printer in Smith Hall, Pearson Hall, Townsend Hall, Willard Hall, or Cannon Lab.

Changing the printer setup configuration

To change Pine's printer configuration follow these steps:
  1. Type pine and press the RETURN key.

  2. Press the S key to select "SETUP."

  3. Press the P key to select "[Printer]."

  4. Use the arrow key(s) to move the cursor to highlight the line "Standard UNIX print command" and press the S key. Near the top of the menu screen, you will see the program message "Default printer currently set to 'lpr'."

  5. Press the E key to "Exit Config." The program will ask you if you want to commit to these changes. Press the Y key to select "[Yes]."

  6. Pine is now configured to use the "lpr" command to direct e-mail messages to the "smips" queue for printing in 004 Smith Hall. When you issue the "Y" print command within Pine, the program will respond "Print Message # using 'lpr'?" To print the message, press the Y key to select "[Yes]."

Changing the default queue name from "smips"

If you want your messages printed on a printer other than those in Smith Hall, you need to know that printer's queue name. The instructions below illustrate how to reconfigure Pine to use the networked printer in 220 Townsend Hall whose queue name is "tnsps." To use a different printer, substitute that printer's queue name for "tnsps."

Type these commands at the UNIX prompt (%).

  1. Change to your home directory by typing cd
  2. Edit the file named .localenv and add the following line at the bottom of the file. setenv PRINTER tnsps
Note: If you don't already have a file named .localenv, copy the prototype file /opt/proto/.localenv to your home directory first by typing the following command: cp /opt/proto/.localenv .localenv Then edit the new .localenv file by following step 2 above.
