Thomas Buchanan, Daniel Cortes, Karin Silbernagel, Dawn Elliott

Thomas Buchanan
Director, Delaware Rehabilitation Institute; Laird Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Professor of Biomedical Engineering; Professor of Biomechanics & Movement Science

Research:

Biomedical Engineering
Engineering: musculoskeletal modeling, neural control of movement, patient-specific modeling using MRI and ultrasound, muscle mechanics. Medicine: orthopaedics, radiology, neurology, rehabilitation.

Biomechanics
Mechanical models of how muscles generate forces and how such forces affect loads in cartilage and ligaments; applications to osteoarthritis, stroke and sports medicine.

Life & Health Sciences
Director of the Delaware Rehabilitation Institute (www.udel.edu/dri), which brings together faculty across campus to study physical rehabilitation

Daniel Cortes
Department of BioMedical Engineering
Research:

  • Diagnosis and evaluation of treatments for injuries and diseases in orthopaedic tissues
  • Tendon biomechanics
  • Intervertebral disc mechanics
  • Ultrasound Elastography
  • Magnetic Resonance Elastography

Karin Grävare Silbernagel PT, ATC, PhD
Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy
Research: Treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with acute and chronic tendon injuries to achieve tendon health and resolve patients' impairments and symptoms.

Dawn Elliott
Professor and Director of BioMechanical Engineering

Research: The Elliott Lab studies fibrous load-bearing orthopaedic tissues (disc, meniscus, tendon) with damage or injury and following treatments. Multi-scale mechanical testing, computational modeling, and imaging methods are used.
