Call for COBRE Pilot Projects— deadline May 12, 2014
Delaware Rehabilitation Institute to give a snapshot of services.

The NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) awards provide funds for research infrastructure and pilot grants for investigators. The COBRE award to the Delaware Rehabilitation Institute is on Osteoarthritis Prevention and Treatment. Now in its twelfth year, investigators participating in this grant have come from the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Kinesiology & Applied Physiology, Mathematics, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physical Therapy. Thus, this research represents a broad approach to osteoarthritis research, from sub-cellular mechanisms to tissue engineering to modeling & simulation to clinical interventions. The Walk to Cure Arthritis raises funds and awareness to fight the nation's leading cause of disability. We aren't just helping the millions of people who live with arthritis pain, we're funding research that's getting us closer to a cure.

The event features a three-mile and one-mile course, with arthritis information and activities for the entire family. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs.

Let's raise funds to find a cure for arthritis, then come together to support each other and walk! Come join our team and help raise funds for arthritis research.

Summer Research Opportunity with Delaware Rehabilitation Institute

The Delaware Rehabilitation Institute (DRI) at University of Delaware is the leading national center for physical rehabilitation research. DRI promotes high-quality interdisciplinary research within a scholarly environment that enjoins learning, discovery and community in rehabilitation practices.

DRI is seeking 4 highly qualified undergraduate students for 10-week, paid internships in Summer 2014. Interns will participate in UD's Summer Scholar's Program and will be paired with researchers int he areas of biomechanics and movement sciences at either the STAR or main campuses.

Applicants should show strong interest in biomechanics and have a foundation inexperimental design, data analysis, and mechanics. Mechanical and biomedical engineering students may be preferred, but all are welcome to apply.

The FY14 Defense Appropriations Act provides $30 million (M) to the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) to support research focused on optimizing recovery and restoration of function for military personnel with orthopaedic injuries sustained in combat or combat-related duties. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). Read more »

UD professor studies post-traumatic osteoarthritis treatment.
Joint trauma, such as meniscus and ligament tears, ruptures and sprains are among the most common injuries sustained by members of the United States military during training and service. In fact, according to the University of Delaware’s X. Lucas Lu, soldiers across all branches of the United States military experience traumatic knee, shoulder and other joint injuries at rates comparable to that of professional athletes. As a result, large portions of active and inactive service members live and suffer daily with pain. While these traumatic injuries can be treated and corrected through surgery, Lu, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering with expertise in cartilage bioengineering and osteoarthritis, knows that within a few years patients often develop a condition known as “post-traumatic osteoarthritis” (PTOA). North East Regional IDeA Conference — August 19, 2013
Building biomedical capacity.
The fifth Northeast Regional Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program Meeting drew some 300 attendees to the University of Delaware campus from Aug. 14–16.  Participants represented all five IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) programs and 17 Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) programs in Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Funded and administered by NIH’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the IDeA program is aimed at broadening the geographic distribution of NIH funding for biomedical and behavioral research. UD engineering undergraduates showcase new inventions at design expo.
From quick-change prosthetic legs for triathletes to assistive rowing devices, undergraduates in the University of Delaware’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Biomedical Engineering Program showcased their semester-long design projects at a first of its kind juried research design presentation at Pearson Hall on May 9. CBER Celebration — May 9, 2013

The University of Delaware’s Center for Biomedical Engineering Research (CBER) celebrated a decade of research and service to the University community May 3, when it held its 10th annual biomechanics research symposium. “The center’s original goal was to promote interdisciplinary research,” commented Jill Higginson, associate professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, and director of the CBER. “As we enter our 11th year, we are expanding our mission to include more undergraduate research exposure for students, while improving the center’s industry partnerships and outreach efforts.” Read more »

DRI / OARSI Workshop — April 25, 2013
DRI hosts workshop on biomechanics, knee osteoarthritis.
The Delaware Rehabilitation Institute (DRI) hosted a Pre-Congress Workshop on Biomechanics and Knee Osteoarthritis at the University of Delaware on April 17. The event was held in conjunction with the 2013 Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) World Congress Program. Some 70 attendees from around the world rotated among four stations highlighting DRI core facilities currently funded by UD’s National Institutes of Health Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) III grant: gait analysis/knee contact force modeling; cytomechanics (mechanobiology and cellular biomechanics); surgical knee dissection; and PT Labs/Clinic. DHSA Symposium — May 15, 2013
Event focuses on transitions toward clinical translational research.
More than 150 academic and clinical researchers turned out for the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance’s fifth annual research symposium on Friday, May 10. Held at the University of Delaware, the symposium focused on “Transitions Toward Clinical Translational Research.” UD President Patrick Harker welcomed attendees with a recap of some of the alliance’s accomplishments over the past five years. Hicks awarded 5 year NIH Grant— September 6, 2012
Research will focus on developing rehab approach for older adults with chronic low back pain.
All low back pain is not created equal, and Gregory Hicks would like to find a way to better individualize care and improve clinical outcomes for older adults suffering from this debilitating condition. Hicks, associate professor in the University of Delaware’s Department of Physical Therapy, has been awarded a five-year, $2.35-million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a comprehensive, standardized rehabilitation approach that is specifically designed to reduce pain and optimize function.
