History
In February of 1999, the U.S. Department of Education called for proposals for a new Title II initiative that would impact teaching across America. Seizing on this opportunity the University of Delaware partnered with three Delaware school districts, Capital, Christina, and Red Clay, and submitted a grant proposal to recruit and prepare a diverse cadre of new teachers, committed to teaching in high-need schools in the state of Delaware.  In August of 1999, the University was awarded a Teacher Recruitment Grant and thus began the Delaware Teacher Recruitment Program (DETRP).  The program initiated a campus-wide recruitment of preservice teachers and enrolled 18 students in the inaugral class of 1999-2000.

Capital School District: 
Located in Dover, the capital of Delaware, this district serves the needs of 6,300 students.  It is home to seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and one school for severely handicapped children. 

Christina School District: 
Delaware's largest public school system serves the City of Newark and the downtown section of Wilmington.  This district serves 20,000 students.  It is home to 19 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, and 3 special schools. 

Red Clay Consolidated School District: 
This district serves the north-western section of New Castle County, part of Wilmington and surrounding areas stretching to the Pennsylvania state line.  It is home to 13 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 4 high schools, and 3 district learning centers.
