Diversity is an "integral and vital part of everyday life and a cornerstone value of our University" ("Guiding Principles," Path to Prominence) The mission of the Center for the Study of Diversity (CSD) is to promote academic research and scholarship that facilitates dialogues about and understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity. The Center brings a broadly interdisciplinary focus to its activities, projects, programs and publications on research and analysis, training, public scholarship and community projects and information dissemination. The goal of these activities is to: 1) generate and transmit scholarship about specific diversity-related issues; 2) fund faculty research and projects related to diversity; 3) bring outstanding researchers and scholars of diversity to campus to share their expertise; 4) communicate the results of the Center’s research and scholarship; 5) apply scholarship of Center faculty to community issues and 5) assist the President's Diversity Initiative and Diversity and Equity Commission in identifying diversity objectives and information needs for the University.

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of the Center for the Study of Diversity (CSD) Faculty Grant Program is to promote the implementation of broadly interdisciplinary scholarly activities that will benefit the university campus and/or the local community, and further the CSD Mission.

To facilitate wider understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity, and to promote diversity within our community, the Center offers small grants to support research/analysis and public scholarship projects in a wide range of disciplines.

A total of $15,000 in small grants from $500 to $3,000 will be awarded to UD Faculty to support worthy projects in the following areas:

  • Public Scholarship – Scholarly based projects that extend beyond the walls of the University. (e.g. Action Research with K-12 Teachers; Development and implementation of strategies to foster physical activity in at-risk adolescent females).
  • Research/Data Analysis—original research, secondary data analysis
  • Policy Analysis/ Research—Analysis of policy implications of diversity related documents/ published papers, public policies and institutional programs

Applicants will be notified of the success of their proposals on December 15, 2012. The grant funding will begin on January 15, 2012, and funds will need to be used within two years. Grant recipients will be expected to submit a progress report and provide an update at a Center for the Study of Diversity faculty meeting in the fall of 2013.
