Creating & Printing Mailing Labels

Updated: March, 1998

User Services currently provides a printing service to users through I/O Services (004 Smith). This service is not to be confused with other label printing services provided by other departments.

I/O Services has the capability to print 1UP, 3UP, & 4UP labels. 1UP and 3UP labels are printed on 3 1/2" by 15/16" peel off labels, and 4UP labels are printed on regular printed paper (a.k.a terminal paper) which can be taken to the Graphics Communication Center at Chapel Street to be adhered to the stock (letters, brochures, pamphlets, etc.).

Printing Labels

Label jobs can only be sent from your UNIX account. To send a label data file to be printed, type the following command at the UNIX prompt :

       ~printop/labels/<type> <data.file>

<type> is the format type of your data file, either 1up, 3up, or 4up. <data.file> is the name of your formatted label data file.

For example:

         % ~printop/labels/1up address.lbls

where "address.lbls" is the formatted label data file name, and "1up" is the format type.

If you receive a "command not found" message after typing the command, then type:

                    csh

at the UNIX prompt, and then type the command to send the label job to be printed.

To make sure your labels are printed promptly call Smith I/O & Printing Services at 831-1152 and inform the assistant you have just sent a label job to be printed.

Your labels should be available within a few hours, depending upon the size of your file. You can pick up the labels at Smith I/O & Printing Services in 004 Smith Hall. You can call Smith I/O beforehand to verify that your label file is ready.
