General Chemistry CHEM102

Course Requirements

Laboratory

·                     Lab meets once a week.

·                     First Lab meets week of September 15, 2003.

·                     Report to lab promptly each week in order to hear lab instruction presentation by TA.

·                     Pre-Lab reports are due when you enter lab, unless instructed otherwise.

·                     Lab reports are due as you leave lab, unless instructed otherwise.

·                     Labs and make-up labs can only be done during the week scheduled.

·                     Missed labs CANNOT be made up and will be either EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED.

·                     No score will be recorded for an EXCUSED LAB (Excused by your TA).

·                     A score of zero (0) will be recorded for an UNEXCUSED LAB (AND Pre-Lab).

·                     An EXCUSED LAB requires a note from parent or doctor to be given to TA.

·                     Lab is an inseparable part of chem101F03.  Your lab grade is part of your chem101F03 grade.

·                     IMPORTANT -  Each Unexcused missed lab will lower your lab score.
An excessive number of missed labs (excused OR unexcused) will result in an incomplete grade for chem 101F03.

·                     Make-up Labs - See Mrs. Miller, 107 BRL (831-1962) for a lab pass.

·                     Lab Safety - Obtain certificate from UD website - www.udel.edu/webct

Exams

·                    Three (3) in-class exams will be given.  See "Syllabus" for dates.

·                    No make-up exams will be given. Final exam score will replace any EXCUSED exam(s) missed for VALID reasons and excused by Professor Polenova.

·                    Lowest exam score will be replaced by final exam score. An EXCUSED exam score will be considered a "lowest exam score".

·                    Exams Cover: textbook, course notes, lecture and workshop material.

·                    Final Exam will be cumulative over all course material.

Minimum requirements for obtaining a passing grade in CHEM-102 are:

·                     Successful completion of all twelve (12) laboratory experiments

·                     Successful completion of the final examination

·                     Obtaining a total of at least 400 points on the "Grading and Policies”.

ChemSkill Foundations – Electronic Homework:

·                     Electronic homework is prepackaged with textbook as a small plastic folder.

·                     Plastic folder contains a CD, a preformatted floppy disk and operating instructions.

·                     You must supply an additional floppy disk as a backup disk.

·                     Floppy disk will be handed and returned by TA in lab every week.

·                     Problems are divided into units, each unit consisting of 10-20 problems, requiring ~1 hour.

·                     Each unit can be worked and reworked but only highest score will be recorded.

·                     Computer will randomly change problems in each unit each time a unit is reworked.

·                     Assigned units: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.
