Applying for Graduate Study

Application Procedure for Graduate Study in Chemistry and Biochemistry

Although M.A., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are awarded, the department normally admits students to one of the following two degree programs.

  1. M.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry. This program is primarily intended for part-time graduate students wanting to gain a deeper understanding of chemical principles at an advanced level. Admission to the M.A. program does not include financial assistance from the department.

  2. Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biochemistry. This program is intended for full-time students desiring an advanced degree in chemical or biochemical research. Admission to the Ph.D. program usually includes a financial assistance package from the department that provides a stipend and tuition remission.

If you have questions about these programs or if you would like to apply for other programs (for example, part-time study toward a Ph.D. degree), please contact the Director of Graduate Studies:

There are two ways to apply for graduate study in chemistry and biochemistry: send paper application materials by mail or use the on-line application. Use of the on-line application is strongly encouraged. It is fast and relatively easy to complete. Materials and instructions for submitting a paper application can be obtained by contacting:

Ms. Jen Durkin
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
University of Delaware
Newark, DE 19716
Telephone: 302-831-2462
Email: pmcmahon@udel.edu

A $50 application fee to the Office of Graduate Studies is required at the time the application is submitted.

(Caution: If you intend to submit a traditional paper application, follow the instructions included with the application materials. Do not use the on-line instructions to submit a paper application.)

Step-by-Step Procedure for On-Line Application

Step 1:

Complete the On-Line Application to the Office of Graduate Studies. Make sure that you send the $50 application fee, otherwise application materials will not be forwarded to the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department for evaluation.

Step 2:

As a part of the Graduate Studies Application, you will be asked to send the following materials directly to the Office of Graduate Studies:

  1. A $60 application fee.
  2. Arrange with Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send GRE scores to the Office of Graduate Studies. (Verbal, quantitative and analytical scores are required. Chemistry or biochemistry subject scores are optional.)
  3. Arrange to have official copies of transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate work sent to the Office of Graduate Studies.
  4. Foreign students only: Arrange with Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send TOEFL and TSE scores to the Office of Graduate Studies. (Note: TOEFL is required for admission to the graduate school. TSE is required by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for admission to the Ph.D. program with financial assistance.)

Step 3:

Arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies. Copies of the recommendation form can be downloaded from the Office of Graduate Studies web site after the on-line application has been submitted. Paper copies of the recommendation form can be obtained by contacting Ms. Jen Durkin in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Evaluation Procedure:

Once all of the above materials are received, the admissions committee will review your file. Evaluation of applications for admission in the fall semester will begin the preceding December and continue on a revolving basis until all positions are filled. When a decision is reached, you will be notified by letter and email. In the interim period, you may check on the status of your application by contacting Ms. Jen Durkin in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
