CHEM/BIOC Graduation Rates

Through the years, I have frequently been asked, in a wide variety of venues, “what is CHEM/BIOC’s graduation rate?” Heretofore, I have only been able to answer in bulk. Examples: Fifty-two CHEM/BIOC/XCE freshmen began their studies in 01F, while 47 CHEM/BIOC/XCE majors graduated in 05S; bulk graduation rate = 90%. Fifty-eight CHEM/BIOC/XCE freshmen began their studies in 02F, while 63 CHEM/BIOC/XCE majors graduated in 06S; bulk graduation rate = 109%!

Professor Burnaby Munson, bless his heart, has taken the time to calculate the actual graduation rates for these two classes, and they are very revealing. Of the 52 CHEM/BIOC/XCE freshmen who started in 01F, 20 (or 39%) graduated in 05S. These 20 represented 45% of the 05S graduating class. Of the 58 CHEM/BIOC/XCE freshmen who started in 02F, 19 (or 33%) graduated in 06S. These 19 represented only 30% of the 06S graduating class.

In short, while we shake the tree pretty hard, we are remarkably successful in attracting students from other majors, most notably CHEG and BISC.
