Number 31 | John L. Burmeister, Editor | August, 2004 |

H. Anthony (Tony) Neidig (MS46, PhD48) has shared some observations that put our current graduate program in bold relief. When Tony arrived on the Mall/Green in 1943, he was greeted by a UD Men's College chemistry faculty of three (Drs. Albert Eastman, Cecil Cameron Lynch, and Glenn S. Skinner), and was the only full-time chemistry graduate student in residence! In contrast, our CHEM/BIOC faculty now numbers 33, with 118 full-time graduate students on the roll - and that's after the departure of this year's crop and before the arrival of the first-year students this coming fall. Tony received a well-deserved Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Lebanon Valley College during LVC's Commencement exercises this past June. He served as the Chair of LVC's Chemistry Department for many years. <hneidig@epix.net> <tony.neidig@verizon.net>
Jane (Mrs. Walter E.) Hopkins (BA48) died on May 19,2003.
J. Frank Perkins, Jr. (MS48, PhD50) succumbed to a heart attack on July 12, 2003. Frank received his B.S. in chemistry from PMC (now Widener University) in 1943. His doctoral mentor was Prof. Glenn Skinner. He retired 14 years ago as Vice-President and Technical Director of the Swiss firm Firmenich, Inc.
Honored for 50-year memberships in the ACS: Edward L. Grinnan (MS50, PhD52), Martin M. Sackoff (MS51, PhD53), Donald K. Phillips (BS53), Frank M. Webb (MS56), Leroy J. Miller (MS57, PhD59). Congratulations to all!

Dick, who was mentored by Prof. Cecil Cameron Lynch, worked, ran tests, or consulted at over 60 DuPont plants and laboratories worldwide. Having risen to the position of senior research associate prior to his retirement, and the holder of 8 patents, Dick now lives in Kinston, NC, where he has honed his strong avocational interest in swimming as a senior competitor, coach, official and North Carolina AAU vice-president. <maggrg@icomnet.com>

Until his death, he was a dedicated student at the U of D's Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington.
The tables down at Mowry's have nothing on those at the Deer Park Tavern, as far as the Amalgamated and Condensed Chemists (see BHC #29, pp. 16-17) are concerned.
