Glenn S. Skinner, Jr., M.D. (BA56) was unable to attend the reunion of the Amalgamated and Condensed Chemists Club (see BHC #29) last summer, due to an automobile accident. Glenn retired from his family practice in Sunnyside, WA in 1999. He was a licensed radio amateur during his college days - an activity that he has continued to the present day. Ronald J. Kaier (MS58) died 2/4/03, following a sudden illness. Ron spent his entire career at DuPont as an analytical chemist, following his graduation, with a B.S., from Syracuse University in 1953. He retired in 2001.
William B. Flank (PhD65), having retired from his industrial career, is now an adjunct professor of chemistry and environmental science at Pace University, in Pleasantville, NY. James S. Falcone, Jr. (PhD72) is the chairman of the Department of Chemistry at West Chester (PA) University.
Donald R. Wilkinson (PhD72) has retired from teaching, having reached the 40-year mark: 7 years as a high school teacher at Manheim (PA) Central High School, 2 years at Shippensburg (PA) University, and 31 years at Delaware State University. At Del State, Don secured ca. $4.5 M in research grants, published more than 30 papers, and mentored 13 graduate students.
Robert L. Hassel (Ph73) became president of TA Instruments, Inc., in June of 2002. Bob's timing was optimum: subsequently, TA won a $20M+ settlement from Perkin-Elmer, after 6 years of legal battles.
Anthony A. Kossiakoff (PhD73) was one of seven distinguished U of D alumni inducted into the Alumni Wall of Fame at a 5/9/03 ceremony in Bayard Sharp Hall. Tony is currently the Otho-Sprague Professor and chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago. Previously, he had an eminently successful career at Genentech, Inc.

Thomas G. Dietz, Ph.D. (BS77) is the North America technical manager for ExxonMobil, in Fairfax, VA. Tom writes that, while working on his doctorate with Prof. Rick Smalley at Rice University (1977-81), he worked on building the methodology and equipment that ultimately led to the discovery of buckminsterfullerene (C60 ) which, in turn, produced the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Prof. Smalley and Prof. Robert Curl in 1997. <tdietz1@cox.net>
Steven Evans (PhD77) has spent a fruitful career in the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories in Rochester, NY, working on colorant chemistry (currently on the development of the new colorant technology for ink jet printing). In recognition of his 96 (!)) U. S. patents, Steve has reached the top of the technical ladder, having been designated a Research Fellow by Kodak. Principé, Ph.D. (BS83), professor of chemistry and the history of science at Johns Hopkins University, is in great demand for his lecture on "Harry Potter, Nicholas Flamel, and Other Marvelous Alchemists". Included in his recent itinerary were talks to the Delaware Section, ACS and the Chemical Heritage Foundation, in Philadelphia. Larry is also a prolific author, having recently published The Aspiring Adept: Robert Boyle and His Alchemical Quest , Princeton University Press, 2000 and (with William R. Susan Hallowell (PhD89), director of the U. S. Transportation Security Administration's Security Laboratory, in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, made headlines (Wilmington News-Journal , 6/27/03) when she demonstrated and discussed the ramifications of using a new airport security scanner that utilizes x-ray backscatter technology. Some critics contend that the scanner is too revealing!
Iris C. Gibbs, M.D. (BS90), assistant professor of radiation oncology at Stanford University, was one of a dozen remarkable U of D alumni from the last twenty years to receive the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement at a ceremony in Mitchell Hall last October.
Holly C. Gaede, Ph.D. (BS91) and her husband, James Batteas, have taken leaves of absence from their academic positions (Holly's at Ursinus College, James' at CUNY - Staten Island) to "see what life was like without (long) commutes".
