Postdoctoral Position Available
in
chemistry of complex materials and surfaces

A postdoctoral position is available in a surface science group of Prof. Andrew V. Teplyakov, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Delaware.
A successful candidate will be involved in studies of formation and chemistry of surfaces of complex materials: metal-semiconductor and bimetallic alloys.  The studies will involve application of AES, FTIR, LEED, thermal desorption, and X-ray based techniques, with emphasis on a vibrational spectroscopy.  Applicants must have good research and communication skills, collaboration with other groups, industrial partners, and Brookhaven National Laboratory (Upton, NY) is expected.
A Ph. D. in a related field is a must.  Strong background in UHV and vibrational spectroscopy is a plus. One year appointment is extendible upon mutual agreement, salary commensurate with experience.
Cover letter, cv, a copy of one representative publication, and three letters of recommendation should be sent to Prof. Andrew V. Teplyakov, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, 170 Brown Lab, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.
University of Delaware is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.

Postdoctoral position available
in
Photoelectron spectroscopy applications
to Materials and Surfaces
Joined venture of the departments of
Materials Sciences
and
Chemistry and Biochemistry
University of Delaware

A postdoctoral position will be available in a general area of chemical properties and processing of surface materials. The research will focus on the properties of complex materials. Chemistry of formation of bimetallic surfaces and metal-semiconductor compounds will be studied by a combination of surface analytical techniques, including AES, LEED, Mass Spectrometry, FTIR, HREELS, and NEXAFS, with a special emphasis on a photoelectron spectroscopies.
Possible research projects for a successful applicant include: a) chemistry of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon fragments on bimetallic single crystal surfaces; b) chemical and physical properties of surface metal silicides; c) synthesis and characterization of thin films of transition metal carbides and nitrides.
The position will be a joined appointment in the research groups of Prof. Jingguang J. Chen, Department of the Materials Sciences, and Prof. Andrew V. Teplyakov, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, at the University of Delaware.  The initial appointment will be for one year, with the option of a second year upon mutual agreement. The position is available starting November 1998 and will be open until it is filled.
The successful candidate will have access to several multicomponent UHV systems at the University of Delaware and to the VUV beamline at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY.
Strong background in surface science is preferred, knowledge of photoelectron spectroscopy is a must. Applicants should submit a resume and a copy of one representative publication and have two letters of recommendation sent to Prof. Jingguang G. Chen, Department of Materials Sciences, University of Delaware, 304 Spencer Lab, Newark, DE 19716.
Additional inquiries can be arranged via e-mail: andrewt@udel.edu.
