Requirements
There are few incentives for today’s bright young person to pursuit a career as a teacher, when the call of industry is there. As a BS Chemistry major coming out of college the benefits of being a science major and not a teaching major become quite evident. First and foremost there is the salary difference. This is backed back by the fact that the two degrees require the same amount of work, if not more for the teaching degree.

First the requirements for a degree as specified by the University of Delaware:

As you can see by Comparison, the teaching degree actually requires more work then the BS Chemistry degree. Some people may argue that is, I want to deal with kids. But in this case the extra work is not worth it. On Average a person getting the BS Chemistry degree will be out of school in four years. The person getting the education degree requires a minimum of five years of schooling.
