It has been well established that most Americans lead unhealthy lifestyles that cause problems and ultimately death. One of the largest contributors of unhealthy lifestyles is a persons diet; specifically fat consumption. It has been reported that more than half of Americans exceed their recommended daily fat intake by more than 10% .
In 1987, Procter Gamble Company submitted to the FDA for approval a new, nondigestible, 0 calorie, 0 fat substitute. This new product, Olestra, has proved to be nontoxic, carcinogenic, genotoxic, teratogenic and is neither absorbed nor metabolized by the body. Olestra has be shown to effect the absorption of fat soluble vitamins into the blood stream and cause minor stomach cramping, abdominal gas, nausia and loose stools. Its use has been limited to savory snacks (eg. corn chips, extruded snacks, potato chips, etc.) for fear of over- consumption of Olestra by the consumer resulting in malnutrition. The FDA has concluded that Olestra is a safe alternative for fat in food products, but has recognized the need for fat for a balanced diet.
