Performance Enhancing Natural Products:
Is
it Appropriate to Exclude Athletes from Sanctioned Competition if they
have consumed such products as Creatine, Androstenedione, or Ephedrine
Alkaloids?
Introduction
On the market
today there are various products available to the general public for enhancing
athletic performance. Among these, three of the most common are Creatine,
Androstenedione, and Ephedrine Alkaloids.
These products can be broken
down into hormonal and dietary supplements. The hormonal supplement is
androstenedione. Creatine and ephedrine (ma huang) are dietary supplements.
This Web page will provide information
on all three supplements including
- Where they come from?
- How does one take
them?
- The actions on the body
- Benefits
- Side Effects
- Chemical
- Physical
- Testing of the body in Sports
Our view is that all hormonal supplements should be banned from athletic competition. In addition dietary supplements that have been shown to cause serious side effects such as Ephedrine. However, since creatine causes no severe effects to the body it should be allowed in athletic competition.
