The meeting house overlooks the east end of town from its peaceful setting which includes a bird sanctuary and arboretum. It is located on a site occupied by a simpler original 1786 meeting house which was enlarged and remodeled in 1903 to accommodate the wider Quaker community. In 2002 another addition was completed providing more meeting rooms, a modernized kitchen, and handicapped accessiblility. The Friends' school building on its grounds is now the home of an active day-care center with strong Quaker ties.
The
Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is a Christian fellowship based
on common religious experiences and ideals rather than a creed, a
ritual, or a liturgy of worship.
Our Meeting for Worship begins in reverent silence. All present share
equally in the service: no special persons are designated to speak. The
responsibility for the spiritual depth of the meeting rests on each
worshipper. Those who keep the silence, as well as those who give a
vocal message or prayer, do their part when they yield their minds and
hearts to the guidance of the Spirit (Inner Light). Thus we learn to
know God is Love; God is Light; God is Eternal; God is Everywhere.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that followth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. JOHN 8:12
Since Love, the outworking of God's Spirit in man, is the potent influence that can be applied to human affairs, Friends believe that we can apply Christ's teaching to every aspect of a full and useful life.
True Godliness does not take men out the world but enables them to live better in it and excites their endeavors to mend it. WILLIAM PENN
When the meeting closes with the shaking of hands, linger with us in fellowship. We welcome you worship with us. Free pamphlets explaining more about Quakerism are available in the meetinghouse.
The West Grove Monthly Meeting is part of the Western Quarterly Meeting of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. More information about this organization is available at www.pym.org.
