The mission of the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomechanics & Movement Science (BIOMS) is to advance the understanding of complex human systems through interaction of experts who cross traditional divisions of academic study. We strive to train outstanding researchers who will contribute to the advancement of health science through translational and interdisciplinary research. Research findings are disseminated through peer reviewed publications in high impact journals and presentations at national and international conferences.
The BIOMS Program was ranked 10th in kinesiology and exercise science programs in the Academic Analytics' 2005 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, and by the National Research Council’s (NRC) latest assessment placed it among the top graduate programs in our field within the United States. The BIOMs program comprises faculty from the Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Engineering and Health Science who use an interdisciplinary approach to research and graduate education. Our Masters and PhD students work with their Faculty Advisors to design individualized plans of study that cross traditional academic boundaries to suit the students’ unique academic and research interests.
The Interdisciplinary Program in Biomechanics and Movement Science includes faculty from the College of Health Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Arts & Sciences who use an interdisciplinary approach to research and graduate education. The Program was recently rank among the top graduate programs in their fields in the United States, according to the latest assessment by the National Research Council (NRC).
Our Masters and PhD students study in one of 5 Areas of Study that cross traditional academic boundaries: (1) Applied Anatomy & Biomechanics, (2) Applied/Exercise Physiology (3) Molecular/Tissue Biomechanics (4) Motor Control and Behavior; and (5) Rehabilitation Engineering. Graduate students work with faculty advisors to design Plans of Study that suit their unique academic and research interests. Students gain research experience through involvement in over $30 million in federally funded research projects and through interaction with a variety of interdisciplinary research groups.
