Putting Podcasts Online

Instructor: Paul Hyde

How to publish a podcast

Enabling a subscription is what distinguishes a podcast from a web link to a multimedia file.

ipod pictureWindows users need to convert the WMV file created by Photo Story into an MP4 file that is compatible with podcasting. Media-convert.com handles this as a free online service. Adobe Premiere Pro can also be used.

Macintosh users will have a properly formatted file output by GarageBand.

Second, we need to prepare two additional files for our web directory: a web page with a link to our RSS file and the RSS file. The RSS file identifies our MP4 file as a subscribable podcast. The RSS file is a text file with specific information and a .rss file extension. The RSSxl online RSS generator is one option for this step. For this session, a sample RSS file will be edited using NotePad.

Finally, we have to transfer all three files (the MP4 podcast, the web page, and the RSS file) to a web server. UD's web server, copland, is one option. MyCourses Plus is a possibility for faculty. Free and fee-based podcast hosts are also available. For this session, the Secure Shell Client will be used to transfer all three files to personal web directories on copland.
