Honoring our Native American friends and building understanding of Native American Culture and Way of Life

Providing multicultural education, as a Caucasian educator can be an extremely difficult task, however it can be done in a respectful and educational way. It is important to provide multicultural education into the classroom throughout the curriculum. When teaching about a new culture, it is tremendously important to do research, and even have discussions with people from that culture. This will not only help you as an educator, but as an individual. Teaching your students about Native Americans and their culture is very important for their educational experience and as a person living in the United States. Native American culture and history has been washed away throughout the years due to oppression and injustice. It is a topic that is not taught in-depth in Delaware history and social studies classes in the K-12 system. Honoring our Native American friends and building understanding of Native American Culture and Way of Life is a unit to help students understand the Delaware Lenape history and how corn plays a major role in their society and everyday life.
