Disaster Safety

This unit is intended for Kindergarten students. The unit challenges students to create and execute disaster preparedness in their home as well as at school. Within the unit, students will study different types of disasters, how disasters affect different communities, how to create an emergency plan, and how to pack an emergency go bag. As a finished product, students are asked to role play a disaster in the classroom where they will take on roles of community helpers (i.e. police, EMS, firefighters, neighbors and teachers) and will model how each works together to assist the neighborhood and community. The students will also be expected to create a finalized emergency plan and go bag to have for their home during this unit. Literacy skills and 21st century skills are implemented throughout each component. Students utilize technology to receive additional knowledge and different types of graphic organizers to manage the information they are learning. Activities include cooperative learning groups, a large role play in the classroom, whole class activities, and final project that incorporates an emergency plan for the student and their families.
