Natural Disasters are Naturally Engaging

This is a kindergarten unit that will address Delaware state social studies standards in the area of geography. It will also address Common Core State Standards in the area of English Language Arts. The class will be studying natural disasters to aid in the development of a mental map of the United States. Students will learn several natural disaster events through the use of non-fiction text and by analyzing video clips. They will study the climatic and environmental factors that lead to these disasters. They will then link these events to regions of the nation and the climates and geographic features of those areas. Throughout the readings the class will also be developing skills related to reading informational texts. This unit could be adapted to any grade from k-5, by choosing age appropriate non-fiction texts.
