Is There a “Scientific Method” to the Madness?

Synopsis

This is a curriculum unit that focuses on the Scientific Method for early elementary students. In 1st grade, students experiment all the time, they experiment with words, feelings, and actions. They experiment in Math, at recess, during any unstructured time, and even in Science. They experiment but they don’t think critically about their experimentation. When something doesn’t work they usually move on. In Reading, we try to get students to sound things out. I often ask students, “Does that sound correct? If not, change how you’re pronouncing it.” I want to take the deliberateness of how we read to how we do Science. What will you do? What do you think will happen? Did it happen? Why did it happen or why did it not happen? What do you think you can do differently to get your desired outcome? What can you take away from this experience?
