This is a creation myth unit for 3rd grade classrooms and will cover Common Core State Reading Standards RL3.2 and RL3.4, Speaking and listening Standards SL4, SL5, and SL6, and Language Standard L5a. The goal of this unit is to have students investigate the common archetypes of creation myths from three different cultures, Native American, Hindu, and West African Yoruba. Third grade students spend more time on their digital devices than they do with a book, yet we are asking them to delve deeper into literature. We want them to compare and become critical thinkers. This unit will help students to do that. In pairs, students will begin researching a Native American, Hindu, and Yoruba creation myths. They will look at the common archetypes or patterns between the myths, like supreme being, animal figures, chaos and order and the cultures influence on modern life. Using this information, students will work with their partner, as well as individually, using a blended learning model, to produce a presentation showing what they have learned about these myths and how each of these cultures have influenced our modern day life.
