Let’s take advantage of one of the most popular and continually growing forms of digital communication in our world today—emojis—to help children from around the world connect and learn about each other’s cultures and backgrounds. I plan on exploring with my seventh grade World Language Spanish students the history, use, and implementation of emojis in our digital world today. Students will specifically analyze their own visual communication through their use of emojis. They will investigate the use of emojis in the Spanish-speaking world. Students will explore the multiple meanings of individual emojis through critical reading, cultural inference and context. They will create their own emoji reference guide in the target language for the novice emoji user. As a culminating activity, each student will be paired up with a native speaker of the target language in order to communicate digitally in the target language while appropriately incorporating emojis into his/her conversation.
