The Science and Savvy of Visual Intelligence

Synopsis

Visual intelligence encompasses one’s ability to accurately perceive the world with all its nuances and one’s ability to remember or recreate what has been observed. Experts believe that visual intelligence can be taught through various training techniques. This unit explores that idea. To begin, students learn the science behind perception. Specifically, the connection between the eye and the brain. Then, visual intelligence is measured during a mock crime scene analysis. This is followed by the students working through a plethora of activities to hone their visual intelligence skills in an effort to increase their visual intelligence. As an extension, students are taught the importance of communication, and given ample opportunities to fine-tune their listening and speaking skills, as well. Finally, visual intelligence is measured once again at a culminating crime scene scenario. Teachers make observations and make anecdotal records. But more importantly, students reflect on their personal growth.
