Social Problems through Artistic Expression

Children are very influenced by their peers and adults in both a positive and negative way. Learning appropriate social interactions are an important life skill that should be modeled for children. Instilling empathy and fostering social skills early can prevent behavior problems. This all comes down to understanding the value of respect. This unit will help student develop a better understanding of what respect means and what it looks like. It will allow students the opportunity to interact with peers in a creative and artistic manner, while being guided by adults to ensure appropriate social interactions. Students will be given the opportunity to create and perform their understanding of respect and how we are to see ourselves and interact with others in our community. The goal by the end of the unit is for students to have strengthened their social skills with peers and to gain a better understanding of the importance of treating ourselves and others with respect.
