Introducing Foreshadowing

This unit utilizes films and written texts to introduce the concept of foreshadowing to third grade students. The function of this unit is to serve as a catalyst for how to introduce a difficult topic to students at a basic level. Through the use of film students can see and hear examples they are already familiar with. The ultimate goal of this unit is to give students a thorough understanding of the concept of foreshadowing. This will be the first time many of them are introduced to the topic, and it is a skill that is brought back up in future grade levels. I want my students to be able to recognize foreshadowing in written texts and films. I also want my students to be able to incorporate foreshadowing into their own writing with assistance. As students become comfortable with identifying foreshadowing, they will start to use it in their own writing. The unit will prepare students to use their voice when writing while using foreshadowing techniques to alert the reader of something to come in the text.
