Innovation and Invention: Its Impact on Healthcare

This health science unit was designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. This unit will introduce students to the discipline of biomedical engineering. Students will explore ways that biomedical engineering has impacted healthcare and investigate the origin of numerous medical devices. Activities include researching a medical device and sharing that information through presentation. The unit also incorporates an activity that prompts students to ask questions that relate to the devices presented. Through use of this carousel activity students are encouraged to think critically and creatively to improve upon these devices that are presently used in healthcare. Finally, students will participate in a summative activity that provides them the opportunity to develop their own medical device and explain the objective for their invention.
