<Normal xml:lang="EN-US">This mathematical unit is designed for fourth grade students and can be adapted for students in third and fifth grade. It should be used in the middle of fourth grade when students are beginning the fraction unit and have completed multiplication and division. It can be used for whole class instruction, or small group intervention independent math activities. The lessons are designed to help students build a deeper understanding of fractions in order to reason and prove their reasoning. The activities in this unit are aligned to fourth grade standards and builds upon fraction concepts learned in third grade. The concepts of partitioning, part/whole relationships, equivalence, comparing to benchmark fractions, and addition of fractions will be addressed. The unit was written to extend ideas addressed in current curricular units. Some activities have been modified or extended in order to develop a deeper understanding of fractions and build reasoning ability. </Normal>
