<Normal xml:lang="EN-US">     This first grade science unit is based on the study and investigation of organisms. It will begin with clarifying and distinguishing the difference between the biomes and habitats since young learners often develop misconceptions and incorrect understanding of these terms. Students will explore the major biomes of the world, identifying the key characteristics or aspects of each biome. Students will looking closely at the organisms in each biome to deepen their understanding of the plants and animals that inhabit each biome and begin to think how organisms are able to survive in their respective biome.  Students will select a biome and compare and contrast it to another biome sharing what makes that particular biome unique by highlighting its organisms. Students will examine their own biome and habitats within their biome. Students will then closely explore an aquatic habitat, examining a plant to discover the unique features (adaptations) the plant has that allows it to successfully survive within the habitat. During the activities, students will work collaboratively in their research and explorations, recording their data in various formats, then make presentations to share their discoveries.   </Normal>
